Scholarship Awards Event on October 7

The Hotel & Restaurant Foundation has announced its annual fundraiser and scholarship awards ceremony taking place on October 7th from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the W Hotel in San Francisco. The event will include a host of Who’s Who of the hospitality industry as well as a career fair, networking session, cocktail and dinner reception, and awards ceremony honoring those students who have received scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year.

You can participate by becoming an event sponsor, purchasing a table or tickets, or by advertising in our HARF Scholarship Event Program. Either way, your donation guarantees your organization will be represented at the HARF event and you will have the opportunity to help future hospitality leaders!

Scholarships Awarded for School Year 2010-11

HARF has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to 55 students majoring in culinary arts or hospitality and tourism management at City College of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, San Diego State University, Cal Poly Pomona, and the University of San Francisco. The students were judged on their potential to become future leaders of the hospitality industry and will be introduced to donors and industry members at the Annual Scholarship Awards Event to be held on October 7 at the W Hotel.


 SFCVB Education Foundation Partners with HARF

The San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau Education Foundation has given $150,000 designated for the John Marks Leadership Scholarship and other related educational activities to HARF. This will be the third year that a John Marks Leadership Scholarship has been awarded. The first was awarded to Kimberly Buhay, the second to Kimberley Patten, and this year to Alexis Van Meeteren. Also, this coming school year, funds from the Bureau Education Foundation will be used as seed money to start a Hospitality and Tourism Marketing class at SF State. Funds have been committed to start a similar class at USF during the 2011-12 school year.

 New Directors Elected to HARF Board

Seven new directors have joined the HARF Board for two year terms effective July 2010. They are: Jim Abrams, Retired President of the California Hotel & Lodging Association; Cindy Crater, Manager, Napa Style in Yountville; Lynn Farzaroli, San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau; Howard Gordon, Restaurant Consultant; Nancy Hayes, Dean, College of Business, SF State; Mark Lucas, Revenue Management Consultant; and Lawrence Walters, General Manager, Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel. Also at its May meeting, the board named former President, Robert Wilhelm, President Emeritus and Robert Begley, Margaret Handlery, Man J. Kim, Patrick Mullin, and John Scopazzi to be Honorary Directors.


Fund Established for Scholarship Honoring Robert Wilhelm

A scholarship fund was established by HARF director Man J. Kim of Lori’s Diners to honor Robert Wilhelm upon his stepping-down after more than 10 years as President of the HARF board of directors. Mr. Wilhelm retired from Westin Hotels after 40 years, 14 of which as Managing Director of the Westin St. Francis. He also served as President of the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Hotel Council of San Francisco and the California Hotel & Lodging Association. Contributions to the fund can be made by sending your check made out to the HARF Wilhelm Scholarship Fund to the Foundation at 588 Sutter, #123, San Francisco, CA 94102.
